Star Wars
What Star Wars books should I read up to the Legacy of the Force series?
I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and I really want to read the Legacy of the Force series, but I'm trying to read a lot of the major Star Wars books before then so I'll have a better idea of what happened before then. I'm currently reading the Thrawn trilogy, and I've read the first 2 Jedi Academy books. What other books should I read in order to fully understand the Legacy series?
I am also a huge star wars fan and am currently reading the book star by star which is the 10th book in the New Jedi Order series and am on my way to reading the Legacy of the Force books too. But truth be told I am enjoying these books a lot! The plot is really good and each book has me totally addicted. Anyway, as to what books you should read, here is my list of books I think you should read before Legacy. I will also put one of these things * by each book that is really optional and really don't need to read it to understand Legacy, but is still a great read! Also this is completely in order of the star wars timeline of when all these books take place. So here goes...
The Truce at Bakura* (takes place right after ROTJ and is a great read)
X-Wing Series* (haven't read them yet, but hear they are awesome and will probably read them some time in the future) Includes:
-Rouge Squadron
-Wedge's Gamble
-The Krytos Trap
-The Bacta War
-Wraith Squadron
-Iron Fist
-Solo Command
-Isard's Revenge
-Starfighters of Adumar
The Thrawn Trilogy (one of my favorites and I think a need to read b4 NJO and Legacy)
Includes:
-Heir to the Empire
-Dark Force Rising
-The Last Command
The Jedi Academy Trilogy* (Haven't read, might be good, some people said it wasn't, Instead I would read the next book called I, Jedi)
I, Jedi (only SW book in 1st person. Main character is Corran Horn who is one of my favorite characters and is in the NJO series so you may understand him a bit more in that series if you read this book.)
The Crystal Star *********** (this is a completely OPTIONAL book! My advice: Don't read it. I read two chapters of this book and i couldn't stand it! save yourself the misery and stay away from this book!)
The New Rebellion* (Great read, read it if you want, doesn't matter if you don't)
The Hand of Thrawn Duology (Great books and would definitely read) Includes:
-Specter of the Past
-Vision of the Future
Survivor's Quest and Fool's Bargain* (Read it if you want, they're mostly about Luke and Mara, though not a necessary read.)
Junior Jedi Knights Series and the Young Jedi Knights Series* (Both series I have not read yet and I don't know if I want to. They might be good but I don't know. Either way, I haven't read them and I have had no trouble understanding the New Jedi Order series. Not going to list them cause there is a lot and a waste of time if you really wanna read Legacy as much as I do!)
The New Jedi Order Series (This series is required if you have any hope of understanding the Legacy of the Force Series. But not to worry, it is absolutely great! There are a few if not many depressing moments but there is some happy moments. There's lots of action, with either x-wings, blasters, or lightsabers. There is also a lot of philosophical stuff about how one should use the Force, in which I find rather interesting. I can't express how much I am enjoying this series, and I hope you like it as much as I do at the moment)
Includes:
-Vector Prime
-Dark Tide I: Onslaught
-Dark Tide II: Ruin
-Agents of Chaos: Hero's Trial
-Agents of Chaos: Jedi Eclipse
-Balance Point
-Recovery (e-book you might be able to find online, but is included as the prologue in the paperback version of star by star)
-Edge of Victory: Conquest
-Edge of Victory: Rebirth
-Star by Star
-Dark Journey
-Enemy Lines: Rebel Dream
-Enemy Lines: Rebel Stand
-Traitor
-Destiny's Way
-Ylesia (e-book, you will have to find it online)
-Force Heretic: Remnant
-Force Heretic: Refugee
-Force Heretic: Reunion
-The Final Prophecy
-The Unifying Force
The Dark Nest Trilogy (I heard this trilogy is really good and i am looking forward to reading it. I assume this is a bridge between the NJO and the Legacy series so I would read this b4 Legacy.)
Includes:
-The Joiner King
-The Unseen Queen
-The Swarm War
Legacy of the Force (And here's the series you want to read and I can hardly wait to read!)
Includes:
-Betrayal
-Bloodlines
-Tempest
-Exile
-Sacrifice
-Inferno
-Fury
-Revelation
-Invincible
Well there you go, those are my recommendations of what to read and I hope I was helpful! And sorry it was so long I kinda got carried away and I have nothing to do at the moment except answer questions! Anyway I hope you enjoy the books!

Immaculate Collection |
DescriptionCD > POPULAR MUSIC > ROCK The naughtily titled Immaculate Collection culls 15 of Madonna's Top 10 singles from 1984 to mid-'90, plus 2 new ones that continued the run (the dirty, trunk-bumping funk of "Justify My Love"--a Lenny Kravitz production that justifies his entire career--and the danceable desperation of "Rescue Me"). Rooted in disco and classic AM pop from girl groups and ABBA to Strawberry Alarm Clock, Madonna made savvy, touching music throughout her first golden era. These tracks retain their sonic and historical significance while, like "She Loves You" or "Rocket Man," still brightening any space they're being played in. Far more than just a wise, irreverent image-maker--like the Beatles or Elton, come to think of it--Madonna during these years was the gift that kept on giving, forever fresh, sexy, hooky, and joyously sharp. --Rickey Wright Features

He might as well be speaking for the legions of fans of the original episodes in the Star Wars saga who can't help but secretly ask themselves: Sure, this is Star Wars, but is it my Star Wars? The original elevated moviegoers' expectations so high that it would have been impossible for any subsequent film to meet them. And as with all the Star Wars movies, The Phantom Menace features inexplicable plot twists, a fistful of loose threads, and some cheek-chewing dialogue. Han Solo's swagger is sorely missed, as is the pervading menace of heavy-breather Darth Vader. There is still way too much quasi-mystical mumbo jumbo, and some of what was fresh about Star Wars 22 years earlier feels formulaic. Yet there's much to admire. The special effects are stupendous; three worlds are populated with a mélange of creatures, flora, and horizons rendered in absolute detail. The action and battle scenes are breathtaking in their complexity. And one particular sequence of the film--the adrenaline-infused pod race through the Tatooine desert--makes the chariot race in Ben-Hur look like a Sunday stroll through the park. Among the host of new characters, there are a few familiar walk-ons. We witness the first meeting between R2-D2 and C-3PO, Jabba the Hutt looks younger and slimmer (but not young and slim), and Yoda is as crabby as ever. Natalie Portman's stately Queen Amidala sports hairdos that make Princess Leia look dowdy and wields a mean laser. We never bond with Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), and Obi-Wan's day is yet to come. Jar Jar Binks, a cross between a Muppet, a frog, and a hippie, provides many of the movie's lighter moments, while Sith Lord Darth Maul is a formidable force. Baby-faced Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) looks too young and innocent to command the powers of the Force or wield a lightsaber (much less transmute into the future Darth Vader), but his boyish exuberance wins over skeptics. Near the end of the movie, Palpatine, the new leader of the Republic, may be speaking for fans eagerly awaiting Episode II when he pats young Anakin on the head and says, "We will watch your career with great interest." Indeed! --Tod Nelson Episode II, Attack of the Clones If The Phantom Menace was the setup, then Attack of the Clones is the plot-progressing payoff, and devoted Star Wars fans are sure to be enthralled. Ten years after Episode I, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), now a senator, resists the creation of a Republic Army to combat an evil separatist movement. The brooding Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is resentful of his stern Jedi mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), tormented by personal loss, and showing his emerging "dark side" while protecting his new love, Amidala, from would-be assassins. Youthful romance and solemn portent foreshadow the events of the original Star Wars as Count Dooku (a.k.a. Darth Tyranus, played by Christopher Lee) forges an alliance with the Dark Lord of the Sith, while lavish set pieces showcase George Lucas's supreme command of all-digital filmmaking. All of this makes Episode II a technological milestone, savaged by some critics as a bloated, storyless spectacle, but still qualifying as a fan-approved precursor to the pivotal events of Episode III. --Jeff Shannon Episode III, Revenge of the Sith Ending the most popular film epic in history, Star Wars: Episode III, Revenge of the Sith is an exciting, uneven, but ultimately satisfying journey. Picking up the action from Episode II, Attack of the Clones as well as the animated Clone Wars series, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), pursue General Grievous into space after the droid kidnapped Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). It's just the latest maneuver in the ongoing Clone Wars between the Republic and the Separatist forces led by former Jedi turned Sith Lord Count Dooku (Christopher Lee). On another front, Master Yoda (voiced by Frank Oz) leads the Republic's clone troops against a droid attack on the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk. All this is in the first half of Episode III, which feels a lot like Episodes I and II. That means spectacular scenery, dazzling dogfights in space, a new fearsome villain (the CGI-created Grievous can't match up to either Darth Maul or the original Darth Vader, though), lightsaber duels, groan-worthy romantic dialogue, goofy humor (but at least it's left to the droids instead of Jar-Jar Binks), and hordes of faceless clone troopers fighting hordes of faceless battle droids. But then it all changes. After setting up characters and situations for the first two and a half movies, Episode III finally comes to life. The Sith Lord in hiding unleashes his long-simmering plot to take over the Republic, and an integral part of that plan is to turn Anakin away from the Jedi and toward the Dark Side of the Force. Unless you've been living under a rock the last 10 years, you know that Anakin will transform into the dreaded Darth Vader and face an ultimate showdown with his mentor, but that doesn't matter. In fact, a great part of the fun is knowing where things will wind up but finding out how they'll get there. The end of this prequel trilogy also should inspire fans to want to see the original movies again, but this time not out of frustration at the new ones. Rather, because Episode III is a beginning as well as an end, it will trigger fond memories as it ties up threads to the originals in tidy little ways. But best of all, it seems like for the first time we actually care about what happens and who it happens to. Episode III is easily the best of the new trilogy--OK, so that's not saying much, but it might even jockey for third place among the six Star Wars films. It's also the first one to be rated PG-13 for the intense battles and darker plot. It was probably impossible to live up to the decades' worth of pent-up hype George Lucas faced for the Star Wars prequel trilogy (and he tried to lower it with the first two movies), but Episode III makes us once again glad to be "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." --David Horiuchi Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (Episodes IV - VI) The Star Wars trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming more than just a series of movies, but a cultural phenomenon, a life-defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's original 1977 film is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," its dazzling special effects, and a mythology of Jedi Knights, the Force, and droids. In the first film, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gets to live out every boy's dream: ditch the farm and rescue a princess (Carrie Fisher). Accompanied by the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford, the only principal who was able to cross over into stardom) and trained by Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), Luke finds himself involved in a galactic war against the Empire and the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The following film, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), takes a darker turn as the tiny rebellion faces an overwhelming onslaught. Directed by Irvin Kershner instead of Lucas, Empire is on the short list of Best Sequels Ever, marked by fantastic settings (the ice planet, the cloud city), the teachings of Yoda, a dash of grown-up romance, and a now-classic "revelation" ending. The final film of the trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983, directed by Richard Marquand), is the most uneven. While the visual effects had taken quantum leaps over the years, resulting in thrilling speeder chases and space dogfights, the story is an uneasy mix of serious themes (Luke's maturation as a Jedi, the end of the Empire-rebellion showdown) and the cuddly teddy bears known as the Ewoks. Years later, George Lucas transformed his films into "special editions" by adding new scenes and special effects, which were greeted mostly by shrugs from fans. They were perfectly happy with the films they had grown up with (who cares if Greedo shot first?), and thus disappointed by Lucas's decision to make the special editions the only versions available. --David Horiuchi DVD & Blu-ray Versions of Star Wars Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc) Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition Without Bonus Disc) Star Wars Trilogy Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy (Episodes I - III) [Blu-ray] Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (Episodes IV - VI) [Blu-ray] Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-VI) [Blu-ray] Release Date September 21, 2004 December 6, 2005 November 4, 2008 November 4, 2008 September 16, 2011 September 16, 2011 September 16, 2011 Format/Disc # DVD (4 Discs) DVD (3 Discs) DVD (6 Discs) DVD (6 Discs) Blu-ray (3 Discs) Blu-ray (3 Discs) Blu-ray (9 Discs) + 16 page booklet Blu-ray 3D No No No No No No No Blu-ray No No No No Yes Yes Yes DVD Yes Yes Yes Yes No No No Digital Copy No No No No No No No Original Theatrical Version No No Yes Yes No No No Bonus Features Star Wars, Episode IV: Commentary by George Lucas, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren, and Carrie Fisher Star Wars, Episode V: Commentary by George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren, and Carrie Fisher Bonus Disc: All-new bonus features, including the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced on the Star Wars saga, and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films "Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy" Featurettes: The Legendary Creatures of Star Wars, The Birth of the Lightsaber, The Legacy of Star Wars Teasers, Trailers, TV spots, Still GalleriesPlayable Xbox demo of the new Lucasarts game Star Wars BattlefrontThe making of the Episode III videogameExclusive preview of Star Wars: Episode III Star Wars Episode IV: Commentary by George Lucas, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren, and Carrie Fisher Star Wars Episode V: Commentary by George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren, and Carrie Fisher None Star Wars, Episode I: Commentary by George Lucas and companyStar Wars, Episode II: From Puppets to PixelsState of the Art: Previsualization of Episode II8 deleted scenes with introsMusic VideoVisual Specs Breakdown12 Web Documentaries4 Trailers12 TV SpotsEaster EggStill Galleries DVD-ROM links Star Wars, Episode I: Audio Commentary with George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, Rob Coleman, John Knoll, Dennis Muren and Scott Squires, Audio Commentary from Archival Interviews with Cast and Crew Star Wars, Episode II: Audio Commentary with George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, Rob Coleman, Pablo Helman, John Knoll and Ben Snow, Audio Commentary from Archival Interviews with Cast and Crew Star Wars, Episode III: Audio Commentary with George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Rob Coleman, John Knoll and Roger Guyett Audio Commentary from Archival Interviews with Cast and Crew Star Wars, Episode IV: Audio Commentary with George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt and Dennis Muren Audio Commentary from Archival Interviews with Cast and Crew Star Wars, Episode V: Audio Commentary with George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt and Dennis Muren Audio Commentary from Archival Interviews with Cast and Crew Star Wars, Episode VI: Audio Commentary with George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt and Dennis Muren, > Audio Commentary from Archival Interviews with Cast and Crew Same as Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy (Episodes I-III) [Blu-ray] and Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (Episodes IV-VI) [Blu-ray] plus: New! The Godfather Collection (The Coppola Restoration) [Blu-ray] |
DescriptionThroughout his long, wandering, often distinguished career Francis Ford Coppola has made many films that are good and fine, many more that are flawed but undeniably interesting, and a handful of duds that are worth viewing if only because his personality is so flagrantly absent. Yet he is and always shall be known as the man who directed the Godfather films, a series that has dominated and defined their creator in a way perhaps no other director can understand. Coppola has never been able to leave them alone, whether returning after 15 years to make a trilogy of the diptych, or re-editing the first two films into chronological order for a separate video release as The Godfather Saga. The films are our very own Shakespearean cycle: they tell a tale of a vicious mobster and his extended personal and professional families (once the stuff of righteous moral comeuppance), and they dared to present themselves with an epic sweep and an unapologetically tragic tone. Murder, it turned out, was a serious business. The first film remains a towering achievement, brilliantly cast and conceived. The entry of Michael Corleone into the family business, the transition of power from his father, the ruthless dispatch of his enemies--all this is told with an assurance that is breathtaking to behold. And it turned out to be merely prologue; two years later The Godfather, Part II balanced Michael's ever-greater acquisition of power and influence during the fall of Cuba with the story of his father's own youthful rise from immigrant slums. The stakes were higher, the story's construction more elaborate, and the isolated despair at the end wholly earned. (Has there ever been a cinematic performance greater than Al Pacino's Michael, so smart and ambitious, marching through the years into what he knows is his own doom with eyes open and hungry?) The Godfather, Part III was mostly written off as an attempted cash-in, but it is a wholly worthy conclusion, less slow than autumnally patient and almost merciless in the way it brings Michael's past sins crashing down around him even as he tries to redeem himself. --Bruce ReidOn the DVDPeople used to say this was Frank Sinatra's world, and the rest of us just lived in it. After watching the multiple special features in the box set The Godfather: Coppola Restoration, one might conclude it's actually time for a cultural and historical revision: This is the Corleone family's world. The rest of us better tread lightly. Actually, the point of the half-dozen or so features crammed onto a disc accompanying the beautifully restored The Godfather, The Godfather II and The Godfather III, is that The Godfather movies have penetrated popular culture in such a deep and meaningful way that they are second-nature to everything. David Chase, creator of and writer on The Sopranos, for example, describes in the featurette "Godfather World" that his hit HBO series was intended to be the story of the first generation of mobsters actually influenced by Francis Ford Coppola's hit trilogy. Joe Mantegna calls the three films "the Italian Star Wars." (Mantegna co-stars in The Godfather III.) Alec Baldwin says no matter what one is doing, one is compelled to stop and watch the films if they're on television. Richard Belzer calls the films "a religion." And so on. A number of people similarly testify in "Godfather World" to the importance and ubiquitousness of The Godfather and its sequels in American life. There's no point in arguing, so its best to move on to the other featurettes, including "The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn't," reviewing in detail much of what has been said about Paramount's mistreatment of Coppola, about casting fights (Steve McQueen as Michael?), about the studio's assumption they were getting a quick-and-dirty B-movie, and about producer Robert Evans' determination to keep his choice of director and unlikely actors under his wing. Fresh information within the special features, however, begins with "⦠When the Shooting Stopped," a fine study of post-production on The Godfather, with several surprising and fascinating facts. Among emerging details is an explanation of why Michael Corleone's scream toward the end of The Godfather III is silenced out. (Hint: it was meant to be the inverse of a sound effect in the first movie.) "Emulsional Rescue: Revealing The Godfather" talks about the painstaking work of restoring the first two films, beginning with a phone call from Coppola to Steven Spielberg (after the latter's DreamWorks studio became part of the Viacom family) asking if he'd request money from Paramount for restoration work. "The Godfather On the Red Carpet is a negligible series of fawning statements about the movie from hot young actors, while "Four Short Films" are brief and enjoyable takes on different aspects of The Godfather's impact on modern living. --Tom Keogh Stills from The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset (Click for larger image) People used to say this was Frank Sinatra's world, and the rest of us just lived in it. Star Wars Lego Sets
Star Wars Legos are the greatest thing according to my 10 year old son. He has been building legos since he was about 5 and he has built the cars, the Bionicles and the other action sets but Star Wars Lego Sets are by far his favorite.
There are many Star Wars Legos to chose from, you can either be a good guy or join the Dark Side. He started out building some of the more basic Star Wars Lego Sets and is always looking for the next challenge. Every time we go to Target or WalMart we have to check and see if there is a new Star Wars Legos Set out.
Star Wars Legos come in sets as low as $10 up to hundreds of dollars. While the smaller Star Wars Lego Sets are relatively easy to build, usually having only a few bags of parts, some of the bigger Star Wars Legos have many bags of parts and several assembly manuals. On thing we found out the hard way, is the parts bags are usually logically grouped so that similar parts for a particular assembly portion are grouped together. Now when he builds a Star Wars Lego set, he puts each bag into a small bowl rather than dumping them all together in one big bowl.
The biggest Star Wars Lego Sets he has built so far must have had 400 pieces. I know it ran around $50 or so and kept him busy for several nights. Every so often he would come over and show me how some part went together and what it could do. One of my favorite Star Wars Lego Sets he built is one of the walkers (sorry, Star Wars fans, I know it's called something more complex than that). It was kind of hard to build because so many of the pieces were gray. It looks really cool on display.
One thing I have noticed about Star Wars Legos, and it probably holds true with any Legos set, is my son always wants to see what "guys" come with the kit. Some of the Star Wars Legos kits come with 4 or 5 guys. Very important in the Lego world.
One day when I thought we had bought all the Star Wars Lego Sets, I went on line to see what is available. Wow!! That's where I found out just how big some of the Star Wars Legos can be. You can even build the Death Star, if you can afford it and you have the patience. My son insists that he will buy it someday.
As for "guys", you can actually buy Star Wars Lego Kits of actual characters like Darth Vader, very cool.
I have always like Legos and all though I am not a Star Wars fan, I really like the fact that my son spends hours building them and is proud to display them. Besides, there is much more to life than video games. Oh yeah, you can get a Star Wars Legos video game to!
Amazon offers some really cool Star Wars Legos Sets you won't find at your local big buy store, check it out.

Starting With Postage Stamps Collecting
There are lots of that experience collecting. I know my mom enjoys collecting just about anything, and the upstairs of her house proves just that. Such a lot have a miles narrower focus however, they usually make a choice only one or two issues to form collections.
