MTV Aretha Franklin - live?
I saw on MTV Aretha Franklin sing 'Respect' live in a black and white video which was at the end of one of her live concerts and it was superb ! Does anyone know where this concert was and can you buy the whole thing on DVD ?
You might be thinking of a concert that was filmed in black & white, in Stockholm, Sweden, in the spring of 1968. It was the opening night of her first European tour. An album from that tour, "Aretha in Paris" was released. But, there is another clip of her (again, a B&W clip) singing Respect, but there is little information about this performance. The Stockholm video says it's 1967, but it is 1968, not 1967. Of the two clips, I think the one you're asking about is the Stockholm 1968 performance. It's the clip that is most often played as the definitive version of Respect -- Aretha at the peak of her powers, and at the top of the charts, too.
BTW, I have seen that entire Stockholm concert. Aretha opened with "There's no Business like Show Business", and then she did the Rolling Stones', "Satisfaction", and then she switched into her own material. It's an excellent concert. Here's another clip from the same show:
