Worlds Fair
Worlds Fair
Whats the difference between the Chicago Worlds Fair of 1933 and the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893?
i have a research paper on, what i though was, the Chicago World's Fair... But i looked it up and i found two instances. One: the World's Columbian Exposition hosted in Chicago in 1893 and Two: Chicago's World Fair hosted in, obviously, Chicago in 1933. What is the difference between these two fairs?

In my heart I wish we could wrap our arms around every single person whose world has crumbled and shelter them from care and share with them the peace and safety we are blessed with here in Canada .

OXO Good Grips Stainless Food Scale with Pull-Out Display |
DescriptionOXO's user-friendly food scale with pull-out display is perfect for weighing all ingredients. Weigh items directly on the platform, on a plate or in a bowl, and pull the display away from the base to prevent shadowing from large plates and bowls. Accurately measure ingredients when cooking and baking and stick to a diet by weighing portions. An optional backlight makes the display easier to read and a weight indicator shows the capacity left on the Scale before maximum capacity is reached. Press the zero button to offset the weight of a container or to set the weight back to zero so you can add additional ingredients. The display features large, easy-to-read numbers which measure in 1/8-oz (imperial) and 1-g (metric) increments. The stainless steel platform can be removed for cleaning but no parts are dishwasher safe. The scale has an 11-lb capacity and 4 AAA batteries are included. Measures in 1/8-oz (imperial) and 1-g (metric) increments for greater accuracy Easy-to-read, large display numbers Stainless steel platform can be removed for cleaning Thin profile allows for easy storage Features

The Eagles - Farewell 1 Tour - Live From Melbourne |
DescriptionThirty songs, spread out over two discs and well over two and a half hours, with fine performances, great sound, and good visual direction: it's all here on Farewell 1 Tour, a documentary of the Eagles' 2004 concert in Melbourne, Australia. At one point, the veteran band seemed unlikely to even make it to the new millennium, but here they are, mostly intact, with a string of hits dating back more than three decades. The majority of them are performed here, from the earliest ("Take It Easy," "Desperado," "Peaceful Easy Feeling") through "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane" and right up to "Love Will Keep Us Alive" (from Hell Freezes Over, their most recent recording with new material on it); there are also hits from Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh's solo careers, and a few new songs as well, including Walsh's "One Day at a Time" (an earnest ode to his new-found sobriety) and "Hole in the World," Frey and Henley's moving, almost gospel-tinged reaction to the events of 9/11/01. Guitarist Don Felder, who split acrimoniously with the band in 2001, isn't much missed, as replacement Steuart Smith plays the parts just as Felder did--i.e., pretty much exactly as they were recorded (indeed, pristine recreations of the studio versions of their songs has always been a hallmark of the Eagles' live shows). As for the somewhat cheeky title, well, there's always been a certain smugness to the Eagles' sense of humor, and it's no different this time, as Frey doesn't even pretend that there won't be a Farewell 2 Tour in the future. And why not? These are good songs, played beautifully by the quartet (plus supplemental musicians) to audiences that love them. Bonus material is limited to perfunctory interviews with the band. --Sam Graham Disc 1:The Long RunNew Kid In TownWasted TimePeaceful Easy FeelingI Can't Tell You WhyOne Of These NightsOne Day At A TimeLyin' EyesThe Boys Of SummerIn The CityAlready GoneTequila SunriseLove Will Keep Us AliveNo More Cloudy DaysHole In The WorldTake It To The LimitDisc 2:You Belong To The CityWalk AwaySunset GrillLife's Been GoodDirty LaundryFunk #49Heartache TonightLife In The Fast LaneHotel CaliforniaRocky Mountain WayAll She Wants To DoIs DanceTake It EasyDesperadoSystem Requirements:Without doubt the Eagles are one of the all-time biggest acts in popular music since the dawn of the rock 'n' roll era. Their first best-of collection Greatest Hits (1971-1975) with sales of over 28 million remains the #1 top-selling album ever. The band's roots go back to their role as defining artists in the phenomenally popular Southern California rock scene of the '70's a decade in which they delivered four consecutive #1 albums. In 1998 the Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the following year were named one of the RIAA's elite Artists of the Century honorees. Their momentous 2004 farewell tour filled stadiums around the world and this 2-DVD set captures one of the most stellar events from that now-historic global sweep.Format: DVD AUDIO Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS UPC: 603497042326 Manufacturer No: 970423 Features

Cher - The Farewell Tour |
DescriptionIf her 2002 tour really was her last--and after being "an evil frickin' diva for 40 frickin' years," as she puts it, she just might mean it--Cher has definitely left us something to remember her by. In the course of this 92-minute concert (plus loads of extra features), she wears enough different costumes and wigs to outfit a small (if rather odd) town, surrounds herself with dancers and acrobats galore, shows clips from her old TV series, and even plays all the roles in a delightful mini-version of West Side Story (one of the extras). Oh, and she sings too, covering everything from the Sonny & Cher years to her early solo career and her renaissance as a disco diva via "Believe." Bottom line: The Farewell Tour is a dynamic, sometimes silly, always entertaining show. As Cher herself notes, Britney, J-Lo, and all the others have a tough act to follow. --Sam Graham Studio: Image Entertainment Release Date: 08/12/2008 |

A New Journey |
DescriptionSecond only to Riverdance as an international Irish showbiz phenomenon, previous installments of this Platinum-selling extravaganza have become beloved PBS standards. The original buxom quartet of female singers, Lisa, Maev, Orla, and Chloe, have duly been joined by Hayley and are, as usual, backed by a full symphony orchestra and choir, plus enough traditional instruments (the house fiddler, Mairead, is a powerhouse) to keep things legit. The material ranges from folkloric ("Dúlaman" is best known from Clannad's legendary rendering), to a standard from another Celtic nation ("Caledonia," Dougie McLean's love letter to his native Scotland), to classical lite (Handel's poignant "Laschia Ch'io Pianga"), to movie hits ("Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in a delicately lovely, a cappella, close-harmony treatment), to homegrown New Age (Enya's "Newgrange"). Most tracks are produced to turn, presented in the aural equivalent of Technicolor or day-glo, in which colors pop while diverging ever so slightly from nature. In short, although the album offers fresh material, it covers old ground -- but this is exactly what the act's target audience expects and desires. Fans of acoustic folk would likely find the prevailing aesthetic a touch garish, but fans of Sarah Brightman and Il Divo will be diverted and thrilled. The deluxe package offers four bonus tracks, three of them live, plus a silver claddagh charm. --Christina Roden Celtic Woman Photos More from Celtic Woman Celtic Woman Walking in the Air, Chloe Lisa CD > POPULAR MUSIC > ROCK Features

Armageddon [VHS] |
DescriptionThe latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid-fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy The 1998 testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow. |

Sister Act [VHS] |
DescriptionWhoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behavior, but the cute script turns the tables and shows how the latter energizes the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh VHS Features

It Happened at the World's Fair [VHS] |
DescriptionThe novelty backdrop of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair lends wonderful space-age scenery to this Elvis vehicle. The King co-stars with a pre-2001 Gary Lockwood as freelance pilots stranded in Seattle, where Elvis spends more time babysitting a little kid than panting after ostensible love interest Joan O'Brien. There's more plot than usual for a Presley picture, which in this case is not a good thing, and the songs are pallid, save "One Broken Heart for Sale." The real kick is the futuristic look of the World's Fair, as personified by Seattle's Space Needle and Monorail (both of which serve as backdrops for EP songs). Just three years out of the Army, Elvis's persona is thoroughly square and tame, ruffled only by the occasional comic double-take. And yes indeed, that is little Kurt Russell, future star of Elvis, kicking the King in the shins in a couple of scenes. --Robert Horton |

The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair Remembered
Fair Value - The New Accounting Standard
Fair value can be an accurate way to value assets but it needs time to be fully perfected. As one can see during the Enron ordeal, fair value or mark-to-market accounting can be used to mislead investors, regulators and the general public. Although the actions by Enron did expose problems of fair value, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) believes that fair value needs another shot at the title. The SEC's advice for Congress on fair value is outlined in a 211 page report (Johnson, Sarah). Fair value accounting or mark-to-market accounting is relatively new to the accounting world and therefore as has yet to be refined into a fully reliable accounting standard.
According to the SEC, firms using fair value accounting need to have their assets broken down into three levels. The first level is used for liquid assets with quoted prices of identical assets and immediate access to the market (Krumwiede, Tim). The second level is for valuing assets by observing the value of similar assets (Krumwiede, Tim). The third and final level is for all unobservable assets and is by far the most risky of the three (Krumwiede, Tim). The level three assets allow for the use of more subjective values than objective due to the internal information used to calculate the value of the assets rather than outside independent sources. The break down of the classifications of assets provides an easier understanding of the fair value system to the investor and the general public.
Does the use of fair value accurately portray the value underlying financial and economic transactions? Yes, in most cases, although when more assets are valued using internal valuing techniques then it allows the door open for fraud. This is what happened at Enron. Their use of fair value or mark-to-market accounting relied heavily on the internal valuing of level three assets which in the end lead to massive write-offs and the collapse of the company. Fair value accounting can more accurately portray market value of an asset when the asset is still in possession of the company than historical costing due to its ability to adjust for an increase or decrease in value of an asset while the asset is still on the balance sheet. Whereas historical cost can only depreciate the value of an asset when the asset is in the possession of the company and the actual increase or decrease in value of the asset is only recorded when the asset is sold or traded.
Should there be one universal standard for valuing the assets and obligations of all firms? No, because fair value and historical cost both have their place in the accounting world. There are many different and unique kinds of businesses in the world one universal standard for valuing assets might not be suitable for some. Fair value is beneficial due to its ability to provide an up to date value of a business's assets, but fair value may also inaccurately inflate the value of a company due to its mistakes or misrepresentations and in doing so, a company may falsely increase the confidence of investors and therefore an increase in its capital. As one can see from history this is more beneficial during a bull market than a bear market. Historical costing is beneficial because it is widely used and widely understood by investors and companies alike. Since historical costing does not rely on estimating the value of assets, it allows less room for fraudulent activities. However the use of historical costing can understate the value of a company since the increase in value of an asset is not recorded until that asset is sold or traded. Although this may cause investors to be wary of a company who has a deflated value, this provides a more stable ground in a bear market and prevents massive write-offs of assets.
Can accounting standards allow for both historical cost and fair value and still produce meaningful information for decision-making? Yes, if both are used they can greatly improve meaningful information for decision-making. The use of fair value allows for an up to date value of assets and produces relevant costs for decision making. For example, a company owns a building; the fair value of that building will include the fair price around the world of that building and will include the value of any opportunity costs of that building, like if that building is rented, sold, or used for something other than what the company is intended to use for the building. Since historical costing is widely used and understood by most people, it can be used as an external use of reporting value of assets. Historical costing can be used as a base in reporting value and fair value used as an estimate or projected value of assets to investors.
Relevancy versus Reliability, is one more important than the other depending upon the financial statement user? Yes, one will be more important than the other depending on the financial statement user. Since historical costing is the old standard, more people are able to understand and use it, but since fair value is relatively new to the accounting world it will be sometime before it is perfected and understood by the general public. In today's fast paced, globalized, and greatly informed world, fair value provides extremely relevant information for decision making but since fair value is still new it needs to be refined and understood. Currently the SEC is working to improve the reliability of fair value accounting by establishing standards and guidelines for companies to follow (Johnson, Sarah).
To sum up, fair value accounting practices takes into account more relevant information for the valuing of assets but can lead to fraudulent activities. Fair value can also take into account the value of assets in a global market as well as opportunity costs for those assets. Fair value can be a reasonable way to assess the value of assets so long as the SEC classified level three assets are valued objectively and not subjectively. In other words as long as these level three assets are valued and checked by an outside source to be accurate then these fraudulent activities are less likely to occur. Fair value can provide more current information than historical costing but fair value will need time to be perfected though trial and error and regulation.
