Well, there wouldn't have been any "49ers" gold rush in California if there hadn't been settlers before them who discovered the gold.

If the early settlers hadn't needed the lumber for building and the mill to grind their grain (that's what a grist mill is for), it's unlikely gold would have been discovered.
